1973 – The Year of the Classic Album

I call 1973 “The Year of the Classic Album”. Maybe it was because I was beginning to listen to albums in their entirety that year. Or maybe it was caused by the explosion of Southern Rock that year. Or maybe it was just because albums were being produced and marketed with the whole project in mind (the concept album) and not relying on the weight of a single Top 40 hit to carry the entire album.

Nonetheless, complete works of art were delivered to us in 1973 from artists like Pink Floyd, Elton John, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Billy Joel, The Allman Brothers Band, Wings, The Edgar Winter Group, Stevie Wonder, Eagles, ZZ Top, and many more!

  1. I was 12 years old and my older brother bought a tower stereo system and introduced me to “todays” music. Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon set me off the deep end and I never looked back. Brian had set up a timer to play “Time” and we woke up to the alarm clocks! Seared that memory into my brain for sure.

  2. I was wondering why you stopped playing album deep cuts and started playing stuff that I hear on commercial classic rock radio. In the last half hour, I’ve heard a Chicago song, a Doobie Brothers song, and a BTO song that I would normally hear on classic rock radio. Why did you start going mainstream?

    • Hi Gerry,

Nothing has really changed. I always mix it up — familiar classic rock songs together with deeper album tracks. You must have just caught a segment that had more than the average number of classic rock hits in it. Please continue to listen. I won’t let you down, my friend!

      Best,
      Fred
